Redact bank account numbers from text, JSON, and CSV

Account numbers vary by country and often carry no validator, so this type is detected from context rather than from shape. That is why the surrounding words matter more here than anywhere else.

How Redactly detects bank account numbers

  • Detected from a bank-account cue such as account, acct, or checking account, followed by the value.
  • The cue gates the match and the value must contain at least one digit, so prose after the word account is not captured.
  • Numeric strings without that context are left in place, which keeps precision high.

Why redact bank account numbers?

Account numbers are the second half of the pair needed for a fraudulent direct debit.

Example request

curl -X POST https://api.bitbanger.in/v1/redact \
  -H "X-API-Key: rdct_your_key_here" \
  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \
  -d '{"text": "Please remit to account 000123456789, sort code 04-00-04.", "style": "replace"}'

Every hit in the response carries entity, text, start, and end. The offsets index into the text you sent, so you can apply the redactions to your own copy of the document. The full response schema is in the API reference.

Questions

Does Redactly redact bank account numbers automatically?

Yes. Send text to the API and every detected type is redacted, including bank account numbers. To redact only this type, pass the value financial.bank_account in the entities filter. No training or configuration is required.

What happens to bank account numbers after redaction?

With style set to replace, each match becomes [financial.bank_account] — the entity type in square brackets. Setting style to mask replaces every character with a block character, and remove deletes the span entirely.
