What is Redactly?

Redactly is a PII detection and redaction API for teams that handle sensitive text, JSON, and CSV data. It uses a custom model fine-tuned for AI labs to find 40 entity types — names, emails, phone numbers, SSNs, addresses, card numbers — and redacts them in a single HTTP call, with no training, regex, or configuration required.

One request, text or file
POST text directly, or upload a JSON or CSV file. Same key, same response shape, no pipeline to build.

How does Redactly work?

Send text or a file to a single endpoint. Redactly returns your content with sensitive spans replaced, masked, or removed, plus the entity list with exact offsets.

DETECTION

40 entity types, one label set

Names, contact details, card numbers, IBANs, credentials, health data, and the special categories. Formats with a checksum are validated by pattern; free-text types such as names and conditions use the model. Every hit returns the same dotted label.

REDACTION STYLES

Replace, mask, or remove

Replace keeps the text readable for a reviewer, mask holds the original length so log alignment survives, and remove deletes the span when the field has to come back empty. Set it per request with the style field.

POST /v1/redact
{
  "text": "Call Jane Doe on 555-867-5309",
  "style": "replace"
}
ONE API CALL

Send text, get labeled output

The response contains the redacted text, the original, and one object per span with its type, text, and offsets. Log those responses wherever you already keep records: the request text is processed in memory and never stored.

input.csv → output.csv
name,email
Jane Doe,jane@acme.example
name,email
[identity.person_name],[contact.email]
headers and row count preserved
FILES AND WEBHOOKS

JSON, CSV, and delivery

Upload a .json or .csv file and get the redacted file back. JSON is walked recursively so every string value is covered; CSV is redacted cell by cell with the table intact. Add webhook_url and the response is POSTed to your endpoint.

How does Redactly compare?

Two alternatives come up in every evaluation: a cloud NLP service, and hand-written rules. Each one leaves you maintaining something.

Cloud NLP service

vs AWS Comprehend Medical

It finds PHI, then hands the problem back to you.

  • Returns character offsets, so you write the redaction step
  • 20,000 characters per call, English clinical text only
  • Medical notes only — no customer, HR, or financial records
Hand-written rules

vs regex rules

Patterns match shapes, so the rule set never ends.

  • Cannot find names, addresses, or free-form record numbers
  • Misses formatting variants and over-redacts lookalike IDs
  • Every new format is another rule, a test, and a regression

Frequently asked questions

Short, factual answers about detection coverage, integrations, onboarding, and plans.

Can Redactly integrate with our existing tools?

Redactly is a REST API, so it works with any language or platform that can make an HTTP request. There are guides for Python, Node.js, curl, n8n, Postman, and LangChain, and webhooks can push results to your own endpoint.

What types of PII does Redactly detect?

Redactly detects names, email addresses, phone numbers, SSNs, home addresses, dates of birth, IBANs, IP addresses, and 33 more types — 40 in total, out of the box, no training required.

How long does it take to see results?

One request. Ask for a key, then POST your first document — the API is ready immediately, with no configuration or model training.

What types of companies work with Redactly?

Redactly is built for teams that handle personal data — healthcare, finance, legal, and software — and the API makes no assumptions about your stack or language.

Does Redactly offer one-time use or ongoing plans?

Plans are billed monthly and can be cancelled at any time. The free playground covers occasional short pastes without a key.

What does onboarding look like?

Request a key, then POST your first document. Nothing to install or train. Larger deployments can get help wiring the first integration.
